Inspirational Chemistry!

I found this video really inspirational. When I watched it, it made me think about how amazingly complex and precise the mechanisms of life are. Can it all really be random?

I think not!

Professor Martyn Poliakoff of Nottingam University discusses the winners of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry and explains what they did to work out the structure of ribosomes and the way that proteins are made. He explains clearly and with the minimum of scientific jargon (plus some nifty little dog toys!) how ribosomes make proteins from the coding of DNA. I already knew some of this, but not the up to date details explained here. Today I learned so much more, and the Professor is superb at making his explanations easy to understand. At least I think so!

The video is from Periodic Videos on YouTube.

An Abundance of Apples

Anyone can count the seeds in an apple,

but only God can count the number of apples in a seed.

Butterflies

The lovely sunshine has brought out many butterflies this weekend. I watched them flitting and fluttering around the buddleia this morning and managed to get this photo of a Peacock butterfly as it rested on one long purple and pink flower head.

It reminded me that beauty is all around us if we just look.

Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.
Nathaniel Hawthorne

I went searching for some more butterfly quotes. Here are some of my favourites:

Just like the butterfly, I too will awaken in my own time.
Deborah Chaskin

If nothing ever changed, there'd be no butterflies.
Author Unknown

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.
Maya Angelou

I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly,
or whether I am now a butterfly dreaming I am a man.

Chuang Tzu

The mark of your ignorance is the depth of your belief in injustice and tragedy. What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the Master calls the butterfly.
Richard Bach

Love is like a butterfly: if you
hold it too close you can kill it,
but if you don't hold it close enough,
it can fly away.

Anonymous

"How does one become a butterfly?" she asked pensively.
"You must want to fly so much that you are willing to give
up being a caterpillar."

Let Your Light Shine

This beautiful Morning Glory reminded me of one of my favourite quotes

Let Your Light Shine

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us.

We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.

Your playing small doesn't serve the world.

There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine, as children do.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.

It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Marianne Williamson 1992

How Could Anyone Ever Tell You

How could anyone ever tell you

You were anything less than beautiful

How could anyone ever tell you

You were less than whole

How could anyone fail to notice

That your loving is a miracle

How deeply you're connected to my soul
